Details

Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu are NERI & HU; they have their studio —NHDRO— in Shanghai and represent the first generation of architects and designers working from China with talent and their own personality. They are young, were trained in the US and have returned to the Asian giant with a wish to change the meaning of “Made in China”. Their collection “The Narcissist”, which they have made for BD in collaboration with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS, included in the “Elements at Work” project, is an example: it is designed in China and made in Barcelona. It seems the world in reverse, but this is just a sample of what is to come. Lyndon and Rossana’s work embodies a confluence of western contemporary design features and traditional oriental roots. This project arose from a script created to measure for them. These are dressing table pieces, a type of furniture —very common in oriental culture— which is in danger of extinction. The piece is topped by a lattice with encrusted Swarovski crystals, generating a very special atmosphere when the light filters through.

Schooled in the United States at UC Berkeley and, respectively, Harvard and Princeton, Philippines-born Lyndon Neri (b.1965) and Taiwanese-born Rossana Hu (b.1968) have together become one of the most dynamic design forces in China today. They moved to Shanghai in 2002 while working for American architect Michael Graves on his renovation of that city’s landmark Three on the Bund project. The husband-and-wife team established their Shanghai showroom Design Republic, selling contemporary design, in 2003. In 2004, they established their design company, Neri&Hu Design and Research Office. Since then, they have taken on architecture and interiors projects including the restaurants and nightclubs. Simultaneously, as Neri&Hu, they have created independently-produced, contemporary furniture and objects that have been sold around the world.

Since its origins in the 1970’s, BD has always been an atypical company. Its founders and still current owners, who come from an architectural background rather than the business field, have oriented BD’s production from the very start by cultivating beauty, in some cases above their function. Accompanied with artisanal processes instead of mass production, the new products always have more proximity to art than industrial design. Characterised by superior quality, short-series productions (and on occasion limited editions), and unique pieces due to crafted manufacturing. In the 80’s, BD pleasantly surprised by editing Gaudí’s furniture for his famous buildings and in the early 90’s, BD again astounded by introducing an exclusive first collection of furniture and lamps designed by Dalí. Recently the Collections and Designers with an accentuated artistic profile like Jaime Hayon and Doshi Levien, continue to point the way where design and art meet together.
