A new piece added to BD’s collection of “cabinets”. A typology of furniture which was lost toward the end of the last century and which we, in the last few years have wanted to regain with the same purposeful functionality of a container, but with different character. Distinct cabinets apt for each project: Multileg (Jaime Hayon), Tout Va Bien (Antoine et Manuel), Free Port (Martí Guixé). Very few pieces allow for interventions with so much personality without depleting the function, with which they have been created for. These convert into sculptures in a dining room or in a hotel lobby. Our collection grows with the arrival of a new cabinet by Doshi Levien – designer Nipa Doshi, born in Mumbai, and Jonathan Levien of Scottish descent -, who within a short space of time have converted into one of the most unique and attractive, creative couples on the international scene. This is the second design for BD after the charming Chandlo. Named Shanty, is imagined as a patchwork of corrugated surfaces referencing improvised dwellings across the world, from Brazil to Africa and India. The cabinet collection celebrates the beauty of these seemingly temporary constructions. The corrugated façade appears to be a spontaneous composition of different coloured surfaces, disguising a rational and carefully considered volume of storage. The body is asymmetric and every door opens in a distinct way. The collection has different versions and finishes. Shanty Summer and Shanty Winter, more or less colourful, Shanty Black with brass finished legs and other versions in monochrome. The cabinet can be accessorised with a new mirror system that allows for different compositions. Launched in 2014.

Doshi Levien is a London based design office, established in 2000 by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien. Doshi Levien's work celebrates the hybrid and explores the coming together of cultures, technology, story telling, industrial design and fine craftsmanship. Working across disciplines and industries, they make their own rules that are based on extracting as much richness as possible out of an idea. Doshi Levien work for a broad range of clients, including Moroso, Swarovski, Intel, Camper,Authentics, Cappellini and now BD Barcelona Design.

Since its origins in the 1970’s, BD has always been an atypical company. Its founders and still current owners, who come from an architectural background rather than the business field, have oriented BD’s production from the very start by cultivating beauty, in some cases above their function. Accompanied with artisanal processes instead of mass production, the new products always have more proximity to art than industrial design. Characterised by superior quality, short-series productions (and on occasion limited editions), and unique pieces due to crafted manufacturing. In the 80’s, BD pleasantly surprised by editing Gaudí’s furniture for his famous buildings and in the early 90’s, BD again astounded by introducing an exclusive first collection of furniture and lamps designed by Dalí. Recently the Collections and Designers with an accentuated artistic profile like Jaime Hayon and Doshi Levien, continue to point the way where design and art meet together.
