Details

Orbital is Ferruccio Laviani’s debut lamp, designed in 1992. This lighting object decorates with the boldness of a sculpture; a true icon of lighting design. The lamp’s structure is essentially made up of three parts: a moveable tripod, made from laser-cut metal sheet, that supports a lacquered metal rod. Five arms extend from the rod and on these arms are diffusers made from serigraphed, industrial glass. Each slab has its own unique shape for a bold overall graphic effect which is particularly evident in the white version. The colored diffusers, on the other hand, evoke a surrealist painting when the lamp is switched off. When the lamp is switched on these mosaic glass strips create an illusion. The diffusers are satin-finished on the outside to give texture to the color and enhance the shapes but glossy on the inside to reflect the light.

Born in Cremona in 1960, Laviani attends the International Professional Institute for the Arts and the Violin Making of Cremona and graduates in 1978. He later attends the School of Architecture, at the Politecnico di Milano where he graduates in 1986, while attending at the same time the Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan from 1982 and graduates in 1984. Laviani’s work mainly focuses on art direction for companies, industrial products and retail spaces. Since 1991, he has been the art director for Kartell and collaborated with companies such as Flos, De Padova, Foscarini, Moroso, Society (Limonta), Emmemobili in the creation of the design concept for retail spaces and set-ups.

Foscarini focuses on developing new products but chooses only to put into production those that express new ideas. While inspiration is always valued, Foscarini’s development phase sometimes takes years of progressive research to analyze materials, shapes, processes and operating modes that sometimes lead to results drastically different from the initial concept.

This is why Foscarini lamps are so innovative yet built to weather the whim of trends and become true classics.
